Advisory Board Member – Ms Mavic Cabrera-Balleza

Ms Mavic Cabrera-BallezaMavic Cabrera-Balleza is the International Coordinator of the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP), a program partner of the International Civil society Action Network (ICAN).  Mavic has facilitated workshops and discussions on Resolution 1325 and 1820 in a number of countries including Afghanistan, Burundi, Colombia, Japan,  Liberia, Nepal, Philippines, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Uganda. She initiated the 1325 national action planning process in the Philippines and was also actively involved in the development of Nepal’s 1325 national action plan.

She is currently providing support to civil society’s participation in 1325 national action planning in Afghanistan, South Sudan among other countries. She pioneered the Localization of UNSCR 1325 and 1820 program that is regarded as a best practice example in 1325 implementation. She has produced local language radio programs on UNSCR 1325 in Colombia, Liberia, Uganda and the Philippines.  She is also part of an international team that provides support to the discussions on a General Recommendation on Women and Armed Conflict under the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). She co-authored the book “Costing and Financing 1325” published in 2010; and edited the 2010, 2011 and 2012 editions of “Women Count: Civil Society Monitoring Report on Security Council Resolution 1325.”

Mavic has a master’s degree in Communication Research with cognate on Women’s Studies. Her masteral thesis on Communication Strategies and Action on UNSCR 1325 in the Philippines was selected best thesis at the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.
